MVP or full build? How to decide what to launch first

By GetItDone · · Updated · 5 min read

Quick answer

Launch an MVP first if you haven't yet proven that customers will pay, if the full build would use up your whole budget, or if you need traction to raise money. Go straight to a fuller build only when you're replacing a system people already rely on, or when regulation or contracts demand specific features from day one.

Most founders arrive with a full vision: every feature, every user type, every integration. Building all of it before a single customer has used it is the most expensive way to find out what people actually want.

What we mean by an MVP

A minimum viable product is the smallest version of your product that real customers can use and get value from. People sometimes picture a mock-up or a half-working demo. We mean a properly built product that does one job well, and does it reliably enough that people will pay for it.

When to launch an MVP first

  • You haven't yet proven that customers will pay for this.
  • Your budget would be used up by the full build, leaving nothing for marketing or changes.
  • You need traction to raise investment.
  • You're entering a market where speed matters more than polish.

When a fuller build makes sense

  • You're replacing an existing system people already rely on every day.
  • Regulation or contracts require specific features from day one.
  • You already have paying customers asking for a specific, well-understood product.

How to choose what goes into the MVP

Write down the single outcome a customer must get from your product. Everything needed for that outcome goes in. Everything else goes on a list for version two. If a feature doesn't help a first customer get that outcome, it can wait.

Don't build a throwaway

Keeping the first version small is not the same as cutting corners. We build an MVP on the same foundations as the product it will grow into: proper security, a real database, and code you own. That way version two adds to it instead of starting from scratch.

FAQ

More questions, answered.

  • How long does it take to build an MVP?

A focused MVP typically launches in about 8 weeks from signed scope: a clickable prototype in weeks 1–2, the build with weekly previews in weeks 3–7, and launch in week 8. Products with several user types or heavy integrations take longer.

  • Is an MVP the same as a prototype?

No. A prototype shows how a product might work; an MVP is a real, working product that customers use and, ideally, pay for.

  • Can an MVP grow into the full product?

It should. Built on proper foundations (security, a real database, code you own), an MVP becomes version one of the full product rather than something you throw away.
